Keough recognizes that extracurricular activities are an important aspect in educating the whole person. As Christian educators we believe that high school should be a dynamic environment which stresses interaction among young people; interaction which takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. With this view in mind, we offer our students the following choice of activities:

  • Christian Community Program - membership is for seniors. This program is a requirement of the senior religion program. Students are required to spend one afternoon per week performing service to the community.

  • Choral Group - membership is open to all students who have an interest in music. Their talents are utilized at liturgical celebrations.

  • Journalism Club - membership is for seniors. Seniors publish a school newsletter, The Keough Kourier. All news printed is by, about and for the members of the Keough community.

  • Model Legislature - membership is open to all students. This offers high school students an opportunity to study and participate in the workings of state government. Students attend sessions at the state capital and compete with other high schools on a state level for leadership positions as they compose and vote on bills relevant to local issues.|

  • Photography Club - The photograpy club is open to all students with an interest in photography.  The photography club is responsible for hosting photography contests and stimulating a love of photography.

  • Student Council - membership is open to all students, with officers made up of representatives from all four classes. This organization is in charge of the social life of the Keough community. Some of the activities sponsored have included: freshwomen initiation, Teacher Appreciation Day, the winter ball, junior/senior proms, school dances, Spirit Month and community fundraisers.

  • Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) - membership is open to all students. Members actively participate in activities aimed at making other youth aware of the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

  • Student Ambassadors - Student  ambassadors represent the school at various functions and activities throughout the year.  Students are selected after an application process.  Membership is contingent upon academic performance and school involvement.

  • The Drama Club - membership is open to any students who have any interest in any phase of drama, which includes acting, costumes, stage setting, prompting etc. A minimum of one major play is presented for the school and general public. The Drama Club also entertains at school assemblies.

  • Yearbook - Seniors are invited to actively participate in the creation of the annual student yearbook. The final publication is made available to students and faculty.

  • National Honor Society - Membership in National Honor Society is open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who have a cumulative average of 90 and above in all full-time subjects. They must also meet the criteria set up for the society in areas of academics, leadership, character and service. The members also provide service to the school. New members are inducted yearly at the Awards Ceremony which takes place in May.

  • Rhode Island Honor Society - Membership is open to all seniors who have maintained an 85% cumulative average in all full time subjects throughout grades 10, 11 and 12. These students must also meet the criteria set up by the society in areas of academics, leadership, service and character. New members are inducted yearly at the Awards Ceremony which takes place in May.

Spiritual Life of the School

"Attending Bishop Keough High School encouraged me to develop a sense of community, to realize and uphold a Christian value system and to appreciate the empowerment of a single-sex institution. The education gained and friendships developed at Keough have helped shape my life and continue to enrich me"
-Mary Ann Welch, class of 1973 Director of Program Admissions RI Higher Education Assistance Authority

Bishop Keough has a living faith that personifies the love of Christ. As a school, we involve families, students, faculty and administration into a close knit community whose goal is both educational and spiritual. Teachers have an attitude of concern and caring for their students that extends far beyond the classroom. Teachers attend to the needs of the students, while encouraging them to grow in knowledge, responsibility and faith.

As a community built on faith, it is our hope that students will embrace the values exemplified by Jesus Christ, the Saints and the Church. Religion classes are required of students in all four grade levels, but these alone are not enough to infuse students with the values by which we hope they live. It is for this reason that faith development is a part of every aspect of the school.

  • The importance of prayer is role modeled for students through prayer services, and prayers at the beginning of the day (in homeroom) and at the beginning of each class.

  • Liturgical services are held throughout the year in celebration of the holy days.

  • Students participate in activities that support the values held by the school. For example the school helps local soup kitchens, shelter programs, the food bank, and various non-profit foundations (MD foundation, Catholic Relief, Literacy programs etc) throughout the school year.

  • The academic program of the school, formally and informally, encourages Catholic values. Subjects are taught through a Catholic lens - and when informal discussions arise students are asked to asses the given topic from a Catholic perspective.
